Grace Periods

Patrons are given a grace period after an item is due and before being fined. If item is not returned or renewed within the grace period, the fine is calculated starting from the due date. Check the Borrowing Rules page for information on how long you may borrow library materials.

Lost Items

When the maximum fine is reached, items are billed as lost. At that point, the patron will be assessed the Replacement Fee. If the item is later returned (before we've purchased a replacement), the Replacement Fee will be returned minus a $10.50 billing fee.

Notices & Bills

Reminders about overdue materials are sent via e-mail. Bills are sent out through campus mail once a week.

Payments

All payments are made through the Cashier's Office.

Borrowing Privileges

Borrowing and renewal privileges of faculty, students, and staff are suspended when the total amount billed is $500 or more.

Borrowing and renewal privileges of visiting borrowers are suspended immediately upon incurring any fine.

Students

All money owed to the library is billed to the tuition account. All payments and credits are processed through the Cashier's office.

Faculty

As a courtesy to Colgate faculty, fines are waived once the material has been returned.

Lost materials will be billed to faculty and the fee will not be waived. Faculty can choose to pay the Replacement Fee or provide an exact replacement copy. Replacement copies must be approved by the Head of Collection Development.

Bills may be referred to the Office of Accounting and Control and are then subject to the collection policies of that office.
