Rare Books & Manuscripts Collections

Colgate's Special Collections houses a rich assemblage of rare books, manuscripts, photographs, and other printed materials. The collection is comprised of varied and diverse items, from four thousand year-old cuneiform tablets, to 15th century early printed books, to busts of playwright George Bernard Shaw.

Highlights from the rare books collection include Christian Bibles, Shakespeare, George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce first editions, fine binding, Roycrofters, American literature, and pulp science fiction magazines from the 1930s-1960s. The collection also contains a French book of hours, a Kelmscott Chaucer, and a first edition of On the Origin of Species.

Many of the materials can be found in the Libraries' catalog and some of the manuscript collections have finding aids. Prospective researchers and visitors are encouraged to get in touch with the Special Collections Librarian in advance of visiting.
